First day back skiing

A great way to start the New Year! We are back in Bend, Oregon, to ski at Mt. Bachelor. Annabel and Mom haven’t skied since last February at Park City – and Dad and I had a quick trip locally with my Uncle Mark and Anthony at Thanksgiving. It’s hard to get back out there after 10 months off!

This year, in addition to Mamie and grandma, we have our pals Phoebe and Olive skiing with us.

Annabel loved ski school and got back her “ski legs” – she even made a friend with a matching jacket: Amelie.

At the end of the day, the 4 of us had some family time. Here’s a video (mom wants you to appreciate her ability to ski and record us at the same time)

We are pooped – check back this weekend to see if we have improved.

Mariner’s game

We were long overdue for some serious family time, so we packed as much fun as possible in a 3-day weekend.

First, a Mariner’s game on Saturday night with school friends. It was Felix Hernandez Bobble Head night so we had to get there a couple hours early to get one.

What do you do for two hours at safeco field? Watch batting practice, visit Mariner Moose and wander around aimlessly.

Study abroad

As you may know, my Dad has been traveling to Denver each week since January consulting on a campaign at an international school there.

Well, Mom is back to work and we have had some complications in the childcare situation (to put it mildly). The good news is that my little sister, Annabel has come out on top and is having an amazing adventure.

She has enrolled at the school in Denver in the fulltime preschool class – it’s 100% in Spanish – and she will travel with Dad each week to attend school there. It’s like studying abroad!

Here she is saying goodbye on her first trip.

Dad gets to peek at her from his desk sometimes:

The teachers, new classmates, the amazing people that work there and even the hotel is excited to have her. Tonight she gets to see her cousins who will help make her feel at home each week.

Back in Seattle, Mom and I are staring at each other twiddling our thumbs. It’s awful quiet each evening and we miss Dad and Annabel terribly. It’s only for 6 weeks though, so we are making the best of our time by trying new stuff.

Diving deep

It’s our last day in the Desert -mom slacked off on pictures, but take my word for it – we go to see lots of cousins, playdates with friends from Seattle and lots and lots of swimming.

You may not know this about me, but I have a condition called polymorphous light eruption – basically it’s a mild sun allergy that I react to each spring on my first dose of major sun. On me, it presents as severe cracking and drying with tiny red bumps everywhere that gets sun. The skin tends to get raw between the cracks – making it extremely painful to put lotion or sunscreen. Add that to my delicate disposition and it’s pretty dramatic. The good news is that a nightly dose of benedryl and slathers of aquafor really help. After about 2 weeks, it’s all cleared up and it won’t happen again until next spring break.
Here I am in shade avoiding a final day of swimming:

That didn’t last long:

While Annabel tries desperately to get a penny I threw into the jacuzzi – she tried about 19 times. Each time saying – it is too hard, I don’t think I can. Even mom tried to get her to stop trying.

Denver

We had a great weekend in Denver visiting Dad and meet our newest cousin, baby Eliot!

Here is cousin Oliver making our breakfast.

Here we are all in the car – sunny out there!

We also got to meet little Miss Vivienne:

Got some snow time in and some swim time. A great way to pass the weekend.

Mt Bachelor skiing

First skiing of the season and we are in Oregon at Mt bachelor. We rented a house in Bend – cousins Cody, Anthony and Katy flew up to join us without parents for the week! What an awesome treat for us.

Here are some views, some lifts, one of Annabel dragging another student around ski school and one of me totally exhausted.

Winter, the dolphin.

At the Clearwater Marine Aquarium , there lives a remarkable dolphin named Winter. Many of you may have seen the movie, Dolphin Tale (which by the way received an 83% on Uncle Matt’s tomatometer).

As one of my favorite movies, and one of my favorite dolphins, we had to take a little detour on our trip to Orlando to the gulf coast to visit Winter.

Winter lost her tail after getting caught in a crab net.

As she grew, she learned to swim without her normal tail – this put a strain on her back, so she received a prosthetic tail. Even so, her back has grown at a funny angle to compensate for her odd swimming.
